Alaia Mentawai Surf Resort is an intimate escape into the exotic charm and beauty of the Mentawais. Close to a handful of world-class waves within 30 minutes of the resort, we were in paradise.
My friend and travel buddy Anna Ehrgott had been here before on a photo shoot trip and couldn’t stop talking about how incredible Alaia Mentawai and the owners Nat & Dave were, so I was beyond excited to go with her on this trip in July 2019. She told me that there are “mellower” waves in the Mentawais … some you could even longboard! Nat and Dave definitely knew were to take us when the waves were pumping when we wanted mellower, emptier waves to surf. :)
Alaia Mentawai nestled away on a gorgeous beach engulfed with towering palm trees. When we stayed there, there were 2 bungalows for guests, so they only host about 4-8 people at a time.
The food is healthy and very fresh, and the staff and owners are very hospitable. They make the BEST smoothie bowls … an essential midday treat by the pool after hours of surfing.
Suites are beautifully designed and fully equipped with AC, fans, mozzie nets, lounge areas, and a gorgeous big bathroom and open-air shower. Talk about a restful sleep every night after a big day out on the water.
Friendly dogs roam the property. They’re the cutest husky mixes, and our favorite was Max. If you go there, you’ll know who I’m talking about. He’s a ham.
